Managing high blood pressure using drugs

Once your doctor has diagnosed high blood pressure he or she may advise that you are given medicines to better control your high blood pressure.

There are eight main classes of medications that can be used to manage high blood pressure.

These are listed here;

  1. ACE inhibitors
  2. Angiotensin-2 receptor blockers
  3. Calcium channel blockers
  4. Diuretics
  5. Beta blockers
  6. Alpha blockers
  7. Renin inhibitors
  8. Other diuretics

Your doctor or GP would be in a good position to make an informed decision on what class and drug you should be prescribed and also which brand you should start taking.

For example, your doctor may decide to prescribe you a drug from the ACE inhibitor class and they may decide between one of four drugs from that class.
