Certain groups of people are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes:

  1. Generally, people over the age of 40 years, and in the case for people who have a south Asian descent.
  2. There is a genetic basis for an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, if a close blood relative for example a parent or sibling has the disease it is possible that you may be at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  3. Research has shown that there is an association between being overweight or obese and developing type 2 diabetes.
  4. Several research studies have shown that people from specific ethnic backgrounds have a higher risk of disease development. These include people who have an African, Caribbean, Asian, or Chinese heritage.
