COPD – Causes

When the lungs become swollen or inflamed and damaged, this results in the narrowing of air passages which in turn results in the symptoms of COPD.

In most patients the main cause of COPD is smoking tobacco products. However there are some people that have COPD that have never smoked.

There seems to be a relationship between how much somebody smokes and how long they have been smoking for and their risk of developing COPD. Another risk factor for developing COPD is exposure to dust or harmful fumes. In a small number of cases the genetics of a person may predispose them or make it more likely that they may suffer damage to parts of their lung which may lead to COPD.
