A person should see a GP if they develop persistent COPD symptoms, especially if they are aged 35 years or more or smoke or have a history of smoking.
Early diagnosis of COPD is important because treatment to reduce potentially significant damage to the lungs.
During a GP visit the person will undergo a review of their medical history as well as undergoing breathing tests in order to rule out other respiratory conditions such as asthma.
