My name is Alice and I am a research scientist. Today I am going to summarise Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). I’ll begin by giving you an overview of the disease and then move on to talk about the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment and complications that are associated with COPD.

COPD is the name given to a group of lung conditions that result in breathing difficulties that include emphysema which is when the air sacs in the lungs become damaged and chronic bronchitis which is when the airways become inflamed or swollen and produce large quantities of mucus.

The Development of COPD often affects middle aged to elderly adults who usually smoke. Despite the symptoms of this disease many people are unaware they have the disease.

Given that COPD is a progressive disease, symptoms associated with breathing difficulties worsen over time, which can affect the person carrying out normal everyday activities. There are treatments that can manage the condition.
