Alzheimer’s Disease – Disease Overview

Alzheimer’s disease is classified as a type of dementia and it is the most common form of dementia in the UK. Dementia can be characterised by the presentation of a range of symptoms that are associated with a continued loss of brain function.

If you would like to know more about dementia please refer to my module on that disease. The precise cause of and drivers behind the development of Alzheimer’s disease are not yet fully understood.

This is why future genetics is carrying out forward thinking and innovative research to find answers to the pathobiology of this disease as well as solutions to ultimately treat this incurable disease.

Current knowledge supports that there are four key factors may influence the development of Alzheimer’s disease:

  1. Increasing age this disease is more prevalent in the elderly.
  2. There is a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. I genetic basis that plays a part in the disease. Again, this is why future genetics is focused on examining DNA of different people in order to find answers.
  3. Depression that has not been treated. However, given that depression is one of the symptoms for Alzheimer’s disease, we are not sure whether this is a major driver for Alzheimer’s disease developing. This is another area that we are investigating.
  4. Aspects of a person’s lifestyle.
  5. Illnesses associated with cardiovascular disease.
