Coronary Heart Disease – Prevention

How can coronary heart disease be prevented?

The risk to an individual developing coronary heart disease or CHD is based on a number of factors which includes genetics and our environment.

At future genetics we are looking at ways of reducing risk of CHD to people, and ideally in the longer term develop novel treatments that may potentially cure the disease.

Because research is uncertain people can’t wait for a cure and action needs to be taken. There are a number of straight forward steps that you can take to prevent CHD such as:

  1. Having a well-balanced healthy diet.
  2. Exercising regularly.
  3. Quit smoking
  4. Taking steps to reduce the amount of cholesterol and sugar in our blood.

A healthy heart can also reduce the likelihood of stroke or dementia affecting a person.
